A roaming Marchwarden, you travel along roads to defend strange travelers and pious pilgrims. They'll say you're altruistic, but in truth you seek something personal. A place to call home. The waystation Gheimgarth, tucked beneath the Threshold of the Gheim, might just be the place.
I was inspired by the minimalism of 1990's action-adventure games on the Game Boy & Game Boy Color. I felt there was more to explore within the constraints of those early handheld games. Pact Warden features top-down exploration and combat as well as side view platforming and combat. It also includes dynamic characters, with their own narratives that intertwine with your journey.
Find dungeons and depths which lead to multi-phased boss fights, featuring top-down and side combat.
The world is a mystery with new lore revealed through exploration. Explore the world to find new environments, new characters, and new mechanics.
Dialogue with characters will often involve binary choices along the conversation. These choices will impact the character moving forward, changing their fate as well as their disposition towards you. It's important to be mindful of how a choice will alter a character's life, as their life is important to your survival.
When you are defeated in combat, many nearby characters will attempt to save you. Whether or not a character can save you will, sometimes, depend on whether or not you have helped them. If no character can save you, then you will have to restart the game.
Combat is very simple, but the environment will sometimes complicate things. For instance, an enemy's attack might ignite a brazier and you can then attack that brazier to throw fire back at the enemy.
