Free Multiplayer Arrives for Ghost of Yotei#
Sucker Punch has released a free multiplayer update for Ghost of Yōtei on PS5, introducing cooperative gameplay through a new mode called Legends.
The update, which arrived with patch 1.5, allows players to team up online for story missions, survival challenges, and larger raid-style encounters. Much like the original Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, the mode is completely separate from the single-player campaign and is available at no additional cost to anyone who owns the game.
Free post-launch content of this scale has become increasingly rare in modern AAA games, where multiplayer modes and expansions are often sold separately. Sucker Punch’s decision to release the update for free has been widely welcomed by players.

What the Legends Mode Includes#
Ghost of Yōtei’s new Legends multiplayer mode focuses on cooperative play and introduces several structured activities designed for small groups:
Two-player story missions that expand the game’s lore
Four-player survival modes where teams defend against waves of enemies
Raid-style challenges that require coordination and specialized builds
Distinct character classes, each with unique abilities and playstyles
The enemies in Legends draw inspiration from Japanese folklore and reinterpret the game’s central antagonists, the Yōtei Six, in supernatural form.
This structure closely follows the design philosophy of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, which proved extremely popular when it launched as a free update in 2020 and eventually became a standalone release.
Building on Tsushima’s Multiplayer Success#
Sucker Punch clearly sees multiplayer as a long-term pillar for the series. The original Legends mode introduced cooperative storytelling, class-based builds, and raid mechanics that extended the life of Ghost of Tsushima well beyond its campaign.
Ghost of Yōtei’s version expands on that formula with refined combat, improved traversal, and new enemy behaviors tailored for group play. The faster movement and expanded combat options in Yōtei should give multiplayer encounters a more dynamic pace than before.
While it remains to be seen how far the studio plans to support the mode, Tsushima’s Legends received several post-launch updates, which suggests Yōtei’s multiplayer could evolve over time as well.
A Rare Free Expansion#
In an era dominated by battle passes, premium DLC, and seasonal monetization, releasing a fully featured multiplayer mode for free stands out. Major publishers increasingly treat post-launch content as a revenue stream, but Sucker Punch has once again opted for a more community-focused approach.
If Legends gains the same momentum it did in Ghost of Tsushima, it could become a major part of Ghost of Yōtei’s long-term player base.
Are you planning to jump back into Ghost of Yotei for the multiplayer mode?
