Undead Labs has broken years of silence on State of Decay 3 by opening sign-ups for a series of closed alpha playtests, with the first sessions scheduled to begin in May 2026.
Six Years in the Making#
State of Decay 3 was first announced in July 2020 at the Xbox Games Showcase with a cinematic teaser depicting a frozen wilderness. Development details have been scarce ever since, making this sudden update a welcome surprise. The studio recently released a new “mysterious broadcast” featuring concept art and gameplay footage, confirming that the long-awaited zombie survival game is progressing and ready for community feedback.
The extended development cycle is understandable given the project’s ambition. Undead Labs is rebuilding the franchise on Unreal Engine 5 (with technical assistance from The Coalition, the Gears of War studio), representing a major technical leap from previous entries. This shift aims to deliver a more polished foundation for the series’ signature open-world survival gameplay.
How to Sign Up#
Interested players can register for the alpha playtests now through the official site: https://playtest.stateofdecay.com/. Sign-up requires linking a Discord account.
The first wave is highly limited, but unselected players will remain eligible for future testing windows throughout the rest of 2026. The initial tests will focus on 4-player co-op, overhauled base building, resource management, and combat systems. The alpha begins on PC, with Xbox Series X|S support expected to follow. Exact participant numbers and full platform rollout details have not been disclosed.

What to Expect#
The State of Decay series has cultivated a loyal fanbase through its unique emphasis on community survival. Rather than following a single hero, the games make your entire group of survivors the focus: characters can die permanently, relationships carry emotional weight, and every decision, from resource allocation to risky supply runs, has lasting consequences.
The frozen setting teased early on introduces new survival layers, such as cold weather hazards and potential hypothermia, adding depth to the already demanding resource and base management systems. Previous games were set in rural and suburban areas of the American Midwest and Pacific Northwest; this environmental shift could make the world feel harsher and more strategic.
While full story and feature details remain under wraps, the alpha will give selected players a substantive early look at core gameplay loops and technical performance. For longtime fans, this is the first real chance to evaluate how Undead Labs has addressed feedback from State of Decay 2 (which launched in 2018 to mixed reviews citing technical issues and repetition). The move to Unreal Engine 5 should help reduce jank and improve visuals, stability, and scale.
Looking Ahead#
Alpha playtests in May typically signal that a game is still at least 12–18 months from launch. While no official release date has been announced, a late 2026 or 2027 window appears most realistic based on the current development stage.
This alpha represents an exciting step forward for one of Xbox’s most anticipated exclusives (expected on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and likely Xbox Game Pass). If Undead Labs can refine the community-focused survival formula while delivering a smoother technical experience, State of Decay 3 has the potential to become the definitive entry in the series.
Are you planning to sign up for the alpha? What features or improvements are you most hoping to see in State of Decay 3?
